Although China has no team on the pitch at the 2026 World Cup, the country’s industrial and technological presence is dominating the tournament’s logistics in Mexico.
China has bolstered Mexico’s capacity as a host country with railways and buses, as well as the tournament’s official footballs. And that support comes at a time when the Latin American country is navigating its relations with Beijing amid mounting pressure from Washington.
Among the bigger-ticket items on a long list of support for Mexico, enterprises from China have supplied 115 light-rail trains designed to serve Mexico City’s Fifa World Cup venues and 1,000 new-energy buses to transport tourists, according to Chinese media reports.
The state-owned China Railway No 4 Engineering Group also built a train line to ease traffic in Monterrey, one of the tournament’s host cities.
China’s footprint extends deep into the tournament’s digital backbone. Tencent Cloud is set to provide live-streaming technical services to official broadcasting platforms in 16 countries and regions, including China. Chinese tech companies have increasingly expanded their presence in the global sports event.
Alibaba’s Alicloud remains a long-term sponsor of the World Cup, further cementing the presence of big Chinese tech firms. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post. And Beijing-based PC developer Lenovo, as a Fifa World Cup technology sponsor, is deploying artificial intelligence for match analysis and fan engagement, Xinhua reported.
Meanwhile, manufacturers in the Chinese retail sourcing hub of Yiwu, Zhejiang province, were also mass-producing the tournament’s footballs, souvenirs and fan merchandise.
These contributions to Mexico – the only developing country among the three 2026 World Cup hosts – may help China shore up relations as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum tries to balance ties with the United States, according to analysts.
“China is getting more sophisticated in terms of its use of sports diplomacy,” said Evan Ellis, a research professor of Latin American studies at the US Army War College’s Strategic Studies Institute. China wants to show Mexican leaders that it is a “friend”, he added.


For the 2022 tournament in Qatar, China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) built the Lusail Stadium on a contract worth 5.17 billion yuan, and Qatar imported 1,500 buses from Chinese manufacturer Yutong Bus.
However, Sheinbaum has pivoted away from China since taking office in 2024 to protect relations with her country’s chief export market, the US, said Andrew Viteritti, principal economist for the Americas at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a market research firm.
The leader’s “Plan Mexico” industrial policy, launched last year, calls for reducing imports from China, and in January her government introduced tariff hikes on Chinese goods.
Sheinbaum’s China policies come as the US “has put substantially more pressure on Mexico to crack down” on imports from China under the administration of US President Donald Trump, Viteritti said.
Trump raised tariffs on China last year before easing them after a series of talks, but he has continued to urge US allies globally to help check China economically. Chinese investor interest in Mexico has tapered since 2024, according to EIU data.
The US president is also testing Mexico regarding the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, with no extension yet reached ahead of the July 1 deadline.
Still, the list of Chinese World Cup investments goes on. During the June 11 to July 19 event, Chinese electronics maker Hisense is providing display technology for game-broadcast and officiating systems, Xinhua reported.
Chinese contractors are also involved in logistical and transit expansions, including between Mexico City’s main airport and football venues, the Chinese media outlet Modern China reported.
The World Cup is taking place across three Mexican cities, two in Canada, and 11 in the United States. This year, 48 teams are participating, up from 32 in the past.
