The administration of US President Donald Trump is inviting American CEOs from Boeing, Mastercard, Citigroup and other major corporations to join his delegation to China next week, according to multiple sources.
Trump is visiting China on May 14 and 15 after his scheduled visit for March 31 was postponed following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Boeing, Mastercard and Citigroup declined to comment, but sources said several CEOs had received invitations from the White House.
A full list of participants from the business community has not yet been released.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg ‌said in April that the company was counting on the Trump administration to ‌help ‌unlock a long-awaited major order from China.
Other companies, including Nvidia, are also awaiting final confirmation on whether their CEO, Jensen Huang, will join the entourage. Bloomberg reported on Friday that Huang – who has lobbied Trump to permit sales of advanced AI chips in the world’s second-largest economy – said he would gladly join the trip if invited.
A source also said that Trump’s two sons – Donald Trump Jnr and Eric Trump – would take part in the trip and “visit on ground [for] one day.”
“I’m wondering if Barron [Trump] might come,” another source said. “It’s the end of the semester for him.”
The White House has scaled back the CEO delegation accompanying Trump to Beijing next week, according to Reuters, a move that could mark a contrast with his 2017 visit when 29 high-profile executives joined the delegation.
The group for that trip included Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs, Steve Mollenkopf of Qualcomm, Shane Tedjarati of Honeywell, Andrew Liveris of DowDuPont and Boeing’s Kevin McAllister.
Analysts previously told the South China Morning Post that next week’s summit between Trump and President Xi Jinping would feature proclamations of cooperation, friendship and respect. But they warned that a major trade conflict was brewing beneath the surface, fuelled by semiconductor export controls, tensions over rare earths and other contentious issues.
The White House originally circulated a draft list of executives from roughly two dozen companies as potential participants in Trump’s China trip, according to a report from Politico. Some officials, including US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, pushed for a group closer to half that size, per the report, with the final headcount still subject to change.
In a meeting on Thursday in Beijing, Premier Li Qiang told US Senator Steve Daines, a close Trump ally, that China hoped to maintain “stable and predictable” trade ties with the US and that both should pursue more “mutually beneficial” cooperation rather than engaging in zero-sum games. Daines, a Republican from Montana, is leading a five-member delegation of US senators on a separate trip to China ahead of Trump’s visit next week.
American companies operating in China have raised several long-standing concerns about the country’s business environment, including a perception of unequal access to the domestic market and an overemphasis on security from Beijing. However, they also lauded improvements in the country’s regulatory environment and a greater “openness”, according to a survey from the American Chamber of Commerce in China published last month.
