China’s first high-altitude variant of the C919 narrowbody jet has completed its maiden test flight at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, marking a step forward in the home-grown aircraft’s challenge to Boeing and Airbus.
Derived from the standard C919 platform, the specialised variant features a shortened fuselage and enhanced systems engineered for operations in high-altitude regions, the Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily reported on Monday.
The plane will undergo comprehensive airworthiness certification and environmental adaptability trials across various high-plateau airports before entering commercial service, Shanghai’s Wenhui Bao newspaper reported, adding that it would help address surging demand for travel in western China.
Its manufacturer, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), signed a framework agreement in 2023 with Tibet Airlines to develop the high-altitude model. A year later it locked in a deal with the airline for 40 C919 high-altitude variants.

“A mature commercial aircraft platform must be able to spawn a family of derivatives,” said Shanghai Jiao Tong University research fellow Tian Linchuan after Wednesday’s test flight.
“Complementing the baseline C919 with a dedicated high-altitude variant rounds out the fleet for all elevations, making it poised to relieve capacity bottlenecks on western high-plateau routes,” he told the Beijing-based Science and Technology Daily, a publication of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Comac has been stepping up efforts to build a broader C919 aircraft family, aiming to challenge the market duopoly of Boeing and Airbus.
It unveiled plans for stretched variants and high-altitude, shortened models in 2023. Similar to the subvariants offered by the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320neo families, the C919 derivatives will feature seating capacities ranging from 130 to 240 seats, according to preliminary design parameters released by Comac.
In addition to the high-plateau variant, Comac is teaming up with China Eastern Airlines on a stretched C919 variant designed for high-density and longer routes, according to Shanghai’s city government.
Shanghai-based Comac had delivered 41 C919s to Chinese airlines by last month, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The standard C919 began commercial flights in May 2023. In June this year, Comac said the jet had safely transported over 5 million passengers and served 23 destinations.
Since last year, the C919 has been making regular commercial flights to and from Hong Kong, its first destination outside mainland China.
On August 12, the C919 is set to make its debut on a scheduled international route, connecting Beijing and the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar, Xinhua reported last month.
