China’s wind power industry has set a target of doubling the number of new turbines installed per year over the next five years, as the industry bids to play a leading role in the country’s carbon neutrality push.

The Chinese industry, which already leads the world in terms of installed wind power capacity, aims to install at least 120 gigawatts of new turbines annually from 2026 to 2030, according to a declaration jointly agreed by representatives of more than 1,000 wind power companies.

That is twice the amount of new capacity China installed on average between 2020 and 2024, which was around 60GW, according to data from the National Energy Administration.

The industry has a history of meeting ambitious targets. In 2020, it set a goal of installing 50GW of new turbine capacity per year between 2021 and 2025 – a goal that has already been surpassed, leading companies to aim even higher.

Released on Monday, the declaration also sets a goal of increasing China’s total installed wind power capacity to 1,300GW by 2030. As of August, China’s total installed capacity stood at 580GW, according to the energy administration.

“China’s rich wind resources offer huge potential for development,” the document stated, adding that the target would help “the energy sector take the lead in achieving carbon neutrality”.
