Editorial | 74,000 reasons to believe Hong Kong is getting back into its stride
- Marathon shakes off disruptions of Covid-19 years with full field to reflect spirit and courage Hong Kong needs on road to recovery
The sight of 74,000 runners pounding the streets on Sunday not only marked the return of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon to pre-pandemic participation levels – it also provided compelling evidence the city was on its way back.
This flagship event suffered one cancellation and two postponements during the Covid-19 years. Last year’s race, in February, was limited to 37,000 competitors. The long-awaited return of a full field, running in suitably cool conditions, was uplifting.
The marathon holds a special place in Hong Kong’s sporting calendar. Participants come from all walks of life and have different abilities, from elite athletes to beginners.
The competition includes 10km races, half marathons and wheelchair races, as well as the signature 42.2km events. Funds are raised for 28 charities.
For the first time in eight years it doubled up as the Asian Marathon Championships, attracting top runners from the region hoping for glory.
But for many participants it is more about taking part, experiencing the camaraderie and hearing the cheers of the crowds lining the route.
