ParknStop for customers fed up with rotten tomatoes
Residents at City One Shatin have begun a boycott of ParknShop, the only supermarket on the housing estate, claiming it sells mouldy, rotten fruit and vegetables and milk past its sell-by date. Residents also say they can spend up to 45 minutes queueing at the checkout because of understaffing. The estate's committee backed the protest by issuing the store with a 36-hour ban on using the loading area. ParknShop said it would step up its inspections and was increasing the number of cashiers.

Surveyor asks for pay cut so he can qualify for subsidised housing
A 29-year-old surveyor has applied to his company for demotion and a pay cut so that his salary together with his wife's falls within the HK$44,000 monthly household income limit to qualify to buy a Home Ownership Scheme flat. Their salaries now total HK$50,000 a month. He said he could save only about HK$7,000 a month after paying the HK$13,000 rent for a 270 sq ft home in Sham Shui Po and other living expenses. The surveyor was waiting for his firm to respond but meanwhile the Housing Authority said it would be raising the income limit at the end of the year.

10-year-old boy's death caused by rare virus 
A 10-year-old boy who died after falling ill during a summer military training camp in Guangdong was killed by a rare virus called enterovirus D68, also known as EV-D68, the Centre for Health Protection has confirmed. The virus, which causes respiratory illness, has recently struck more than 100 children in more than 10 states across the United States. It is the first death caused by the virus in Hong Kong in nearly 10 years.

Government's signboard amnesty appears to be left hanging
The Buildings Department has received only 72 applications from the owners of at least 120,000 unauthorised signboards in response to a scheme launched a year ago which allows their signboards to stay as long as they can produce safety certificates. Despite the applications averaging just six a month, the department issued about 40 per cent fewer orders to tear down illegal signs in the first seven months of this year compared with the same period last year.

Eyesight not part of tests for elderly drivers' licences
Two recent traffic accidents have highlighted shortcomings in the vehicle licence renewal system for the city's 26,000 drivers aged 70 or above. The required health examination report does not need to cover their vision or any problems with their joints, both of which could affect driving safety. There are arguments, too, that the three-year driving licences should still be subject annual health check-ups.

Dog's tears moved woman from Jardine's Lookout to rural shack
A retired flight attendant sold her luxury home on Jardine's Lookout and a second property and cashed in savings intended for her daughter's dowry to build a refuge for stray dogs and move in with them. Angela Chan Ka-yee and her daughter now live in a shack alongside more than 200 dogs at the shelter on rented land in Lau Shui Heung, Fanling. She said her life changed when she saw a stray dog weeping as its puppies were rounded up by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
