Abe and Putin to meet at Apec summit
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin today on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit in Bali, where he is also set to give a speech on his strategy for revitalising Japan's economy. Abe is making a five-day visit to the region for a series of meetings, and following his Apec appearance he will move on to Brunei for the two-day East Asia Summit with leaders of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
 
Diamond under the hammer in Hong Kong
A "perfect" white diamond which is expected to fetch a record price of up to US$35 million will be auctioned today at Sotheby's. The egg-shaped 118.28-carat "Magnificent Oval Diamond" - the largest of its kind - has already stunned onlookers at a preview last month. The official estimate is that it will fetch between US$28 million and US$35 million. The current record is US$26.74 million.
 
Buckingham Palace to host football match
Queen Elizabeth's official London residence will stage its first ever football today to celebrate the Football Association's 150th anniversary. Prince William, the president of the FA, helped arranged the match between two of England's oldest amateur clubs - Civil Service FC and west London rivals Polytechnic FC, formed in 1875. Wembley groundsman Tony Stones has worked with the royal gardeners to create a pitch on the lawns.
 
Qatar under pressure over World Cup workers
The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) sends a delegation to Qatar today to monitor working conditions for the migrant workers on building sites in Qatar ahead of the 2022 soccer World Cup. The ITUC has demanded FIFA re-run the vote which elected Qatar as 2022 World Cup hosts and choose a venue which "respects workers", amid reports that dozens of migrant construction workers had died in the country over the summer.
 
Shanghai Masters draws tennis elite
Novak Djokovic returns to the Shanghai Rolex Masters to defend the title he won last year by defeating Great Britain's Andy Murray in the final. Djokovic, who is the top seed, will be joined by other leading players including 13-time grand slam champion and second seed Rafael Nadal, who did not play in last year's event due to injury, and Roger Federer, seeded fifth. The hard-court tournament runs until Sunday.
 
Rappers on trial for 'attacking public morals'
The trial of two Tunisian rappers and a French-Tunisian journalist is due to begin today in Tunisia. The trio were implicated in violence that erupted in June at the trial of another rapper who was controversially jailed for two years for insulting the police. They will be tried for abusing public officials in the course of duty, and attacks on public morals, according to their lawyer. .
