The Inland Revenue Department investigated 1,804 cases of tax evasion and avoidance last year - the most since the global financial crisis in 2008. It recovered a total of HK$6.85 billion - nearly 80 per cent more than in 2011. A taxation expert said that the huge increase was mainly because it settled a number of cases that had dragged on for years and the tax involved was repaid all at once.
