The world's top 10 Chinese billionaires are all self-made and none of them were born in the year of the goat, a survey released yesterday shows.
The study, by consultancy firm Wealth-X, found that the richest three were born in the year of the dragon, considered the most auspicious Chinese zodiac year.
Hong Kong business magnate and head of the Cheung Kong Group Li Ka-shing retains the top ranking with a net worth of US$30.6 billion.
In second place is another member of Hong Kong's old guard, Lee Shau-kee, the chairman of Henderson Land Development, whose fortune was estimated at US$26.6 billion.
Last year's initial public offering of Alibaba Group Holding in New York, the largest ever, propelled the net worth of the e-commerce giant's chairman, Jack Ma Yun, to a close third at US$26.5 billion.
All three men were born in the year of the dragon: Li and Lee in 1928 and Ma in 1964.
Mainland property magnate Wang Jianlin, placed fourth with US$25.7 billion, was born in 1954, the year of the horse.
The year of the goat begins tomorrow, with today being the last day of the year of the horse.
Doctors in Hong Kong and Singapore have been witnessing a baby boom, with women rushing to give birth by caesarean section before the year of the goat as the horse is considered a stronger astrological animal.

Robert Kuok, the controlling shareholder of Kerry Group, the biggest shareholder in SCMP Group, the publisher of the South China Morning Post, is the only non-Hong Kong or mainland billionaire on the list.
Kuok, often referred to as Malaysia's "Sugar King", is also the oldest at 91.
Pony Ma, 43, is the youngest.
Hong Kong's Cheng Yu-tung, who controls New World Development and the world's largest jewellery brand Chow Tai Fook, tied with Kuok for eighth place with US$15 billion in assets.
Macau gaming tycoon and Galaxy Entertainment Group chairman Lui Che-woo, estimated to be worth US$12.7 billion, rounded out the top 10.
