China’s contributions and leadership were of considerable value to the revision of new International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for artificial intelligence, intelligent transport systems and cybersecurity, according to the global body.
The ISO made the comments as it released ISO 9001:2026 on Wednesday, which is the first major revision to ISO 9001 – an international benchmark for quality management – in a decade, it added.
ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica told the South China Morning Post that China had shown great leadership and vision, heading around 100 ISO technical committees. International standards are crucial in facilitating the country’s participation in regional and international markets.
“Beijing has been responsible for the development and revision of around 600 ISO standards. I expect the city to play an even greater role in international standardisation in the coming years,” Mujica said.
“Beijing is an international centre for science and technology innovation, therefore it’s no surprise that it is home to more than half of all the ISO technical committee secretariats held by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC),” he added.
The 2026 edition responds to an increasingly complex operating environment, where organisations must balance resilience with innovation and adapt quickly to changing markets and technologies, ISO said.
The organisation launched its series of standards centred on ISO 9001 in the 1980s. China’s first ISO 9001 certificate was granted in Shenzhen in 1991.


Now, certificates held by Chinese companies account for over one-third of the global volume, the world’s largest share for consecutive years, according to the National Certification and Accreditation Administration in China.
As one of the global leaders in technological and industrial innovation, Chinese experts participate in nearly 800 ISO committees. Input from these experts and cross-sector stakeholders ensure ISO standards address market needs, reflect diverse user experiences and build trust.
“By continuing to invest in national quality infrastructure and encouraging broader participation in standards development, China can bring its national priorities to the international table – helping to write the rules that shape economies and offer a pathway to a more inclusive, sustainable future,” Mujica said.
As an ISO member body, the SAC plays a vital role in developing standards that address environmental and sustainability challenges such as renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions and the circular economy.
Beyond advancing emerging technologies, China, through the SAC, also leads ISO’s new technical committee on cultural heritage conservation, he added.
This work supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which calls for strengthened efforts to protect the world’s cultural and natural heritage to make cities and human settlements resilient and sustainable.
“We are extremely grateful for the commitment and effort shown by the SAC and encourage it to go even further in engaging with the international standards community,” Mujica added.
