Xpeng, a maker of premium electric vehicles (EVs), chose Hong Kong as its first stop outside mainland China to set up a self-branded supercharging station, as the industry’s ambition extends to charging technologies.
On Friday, the company said it would partner with Malaysian car distributor Sime Darby to build its first charging station in Hong Kong’s Convention Square in Wan Chai. Xpeng would be the first mainland-based company to set up a self-branded supercharging network in the city, it added.
“With a charging speed of up to 360 kilowatts (KW), it will be much faster than Tesla chargers in Hong Kong,” said Brian Gu Hongdi, Xpeng’s vice-chairman and president, at the opening event of its first tech experience store in Asia.
Tesla’s superchargers deployed in Hong Kong offer a maximum charging speed of 250 KW, according to its website.
“With our partners, we are leading Hong Kong into the era of superfast charging, a technology already enjoyed by many of our customers in China,” said Gu, adding that Xpeng would bring its self-branded supercharging network to Southeast Asia soon.
With China’s EV penetration surpassing 50 per cent last year and manufacturers facing a price war and overcapacity, industry players have looked beyond simple electrification to ultra-fast charging and autonomous driving.
Carmakers believe improved charging speed and efficiency will reduce the anxiety that drivers have about EV range, which could further boost sales.
Earlier this week, BYD, the world’s largest producer of hybrid and pure EVs, unveiled a new charging and battery system that offers peak charging power of 1,000 kilowatts (kW) or 1 megawatt (MW), enough to give a vehicle 400 kilometres of driving range in just five minutes, which is twice as fast as Tesla’s superchargers.
And last week, premium EV maker Li Auto said it had set up 1,900 fast charging stations since April 2023. Zeekr, Geely’s premium EV unit, said last year that it would set up 100,000 ultra-fast charging poles, the equivalent of 2,000 ultra-fast charging stations across the country by 2026.
As of December 31, Xpeng’s self-operated charging network included 1,920 stations, including 928 Xpeng S4 and S5 ultra-fast charging stations in mainland China. However, Xpeng is not the first Chinese company to invest in overseas charging: EV maker Nio has been setting up its battery swap stations in Europe, while Chinese charging pile operator TELD said last year it would put charging networks in Malaysia.
Guangzhou-based Xpeng, known for its premium vehicles and self-developed autonomous driving technologies, has been betting on Hong Kong in its “go global” strategy. It introduced two new EV models in the city last year.
Earlier this month, Xpeng’s CEO He Xiaopeng said the company would begin testing its autonomous driving system, known as Xpeng Navigation Guided Pilot (XNGP), in Hong Kong soon.
The company has said it would use Hong Kong as a test bed for the international expansion of its autonomous driving technology and it has called upon the city’s government to create a more open regulatory environment for new technologies like self-driving cars and flying vehicles.
Last month, CEO He said Xpeng planned on doubling its global presence to 60 international markets this year, adding that he expected half of the company’s sales volume would come from outside the mainland by 2033. The firm sold about 24,000 vehicles overseas last year, accounting for 13 per cent of its 2024 sales volume.
