Thomas Gnocchi

Ambassador Thomas Gnocchi is head of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macau. Previously, he served as deputy head of division for Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific in Brussels. He is a diplomat educated at the London School of Economics and Yale University in the US.

Born out of a need for peace and unity in Europe after World War II, the EU is committed to democracy, both at home and abroad. Amid new and unfamiliar threats to democratic progress worldwide, the EU has an obligation to show leadership and support populations whose freedoms are at risk.

Since 1990, the EU economy has grown by over 60 per cent while net greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by a quarter. The bloc is now walking the talk on fighting climate change with the European Green Deal. It can share this experience with Hong Kong.
