Professor Mark Yoalin Wang is a human geographer specialising in development and environmental issues in China. He is a professor at the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and also the director of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Melbourne. He has published widely in geography and environmental studies journals, and is author of Mega Urban Regions in China (1998), the co-author of China’s Transition to a Global Economy (2002), China’s Urban Space (2007), Old Industrial Cities Seeking New Roads to Reindustrialisation (2013), and Transforming Chinese Cities (2014).

The Chinese leader’s support for environmental protection will ensure it continues to play a big role in domestic policy. While improvements to the environment testify to the government’s commitment to its green agenda, challenges remain to realise China’s aspiration of ecological civilisation.
