Ho Puay-peng

Professor Ho Puay-peng, JP, holds the Unesco Chair on Architectural Heritage Conservation and Management in Asia and is currently head of Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore. Before joining NUS in 2017, he was professor and director of School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A conservation consultant and architect, he was formerly chairman of the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust and a member of Hong Kong's Antiquities Advisory Board.

While the government has focused on preserving buildings from before 1950, protecting Hong Kong’s post-war architecture is also a matter of urgency. The nuanced approach taken to protect the North Point landmark, marrying conservation with urban renewal, is also commendable.

The lack of protection for the iconic Garden Company headquarters, and many other examples of the city’s landmark architecture from the post-war era, points to a gap in our conservation efforts.
