Technological trends change. Gadgets used and loved in one decade are considered outdated and even amusing by the next.

The same is true for baby care with the advice and methods offered by experts changing with every generation, from decade to decade, and even from year to year.

This means that the way parents and grandparents brought up babies has evolved to the methods followed by today’s parents.

For example, up until the mid-1980s, the consensus among pediatricians was that the recommended sleeping position for baby was lying on their tummies. It was believed this would prevent baby choking on any spit-up during the night.

However, in 1992 the American Academy of Pediatrics advised against it and urged parents to instead lie baby on his or her back. This advice is still given today with the Hong Kong Family Health Services saying lying baby on their back is six times safer than lying them on their tummy and twice as safe as lying them on the side.
