My 13-month-old son attends few activities that don't involve his older siblings in some way, so we were looking forward to our hour of songs, activities, baby massage and interaction with other babies at the Sensational Baby class led by Kathryn Eagle.

Drawn by the sight of colourful toys and large bouncy balls, he was keen to get started and tried to enter the room before the previous class had finished.

Each class has a theme, and everything is arranged around it - from the songs, to the toys, to the activities. The theme the day we attended was underwater, and my little one spent a lot of time happily chewing on a plastic whale.

He also responded well to music time, and I enjoyed learning a few new songs and a couple of twists on some classics. After the class, all participants receive an e-mail with a breakdown of the session and the song lyrics so we can practise them at home.

The class involved plenty of activities to keep baby enthralled. Balancing on big beach balls was a hit with babies and mums alike, and several mums commented how they would like to do the same at home. My son loved the bubbles and mirrors, great for pointing out his nose, eyes, and so on.

The baby massage was something new for us and I was keen to see how my wriggle worm would respond to the simple techniques. Amazingly, they calmed him down - until a plastic fish caught his eye and he was off again.
