Three years ago, I was apprehensive about moving to Hong Kong. I had always taken pride in the fact that we were an 'outdoorsy' family, most of our weekends spent exploring the natural wonders of the San Francisco Bay area.

Had Cindy Miller Stephens' amazing book Hong Kong for Kids - A Parent's Guide been available then, it would have instantly allayed my fears. There is plenty to do with children in Hong Kong, both indoors and outdoors.

Packed with more than 70 child-friendly activities to do, see and experience throughout the city, Hong Kong for Kids provides more than enough to keep you busy each weekend of the year.

I was immediately drawn to the sections geared towards family outings outdoors: Fun in the Sand (Hong Kong's beaches), Family Walks and trips to Hong Kong's Wildside. Here is a smattering of our favourites:

South Bay Beach is a great spot to relax over a casual meal or play on the beach and watch the sunset. The Tai Tam Country Park Walk has become a Sunday favourite, especially during the cooler months. You can watch for fish in the reservoir. Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden is the place for a look at flamingos, a walk by the waterfalls and good lessons on organic farming.

My daughter, Ilya, and I decided to check out the Jade Market. I must admit that by the end of our trip, I, too, was obsessed with seeking out stones with mystical powers to ward off evil spirits. My son, Arya's, choice outings include the Police Museum, replete with weapons, and the Hong Kong Railway Museum.
