A Toyota saloon reached speeds of 150km/h as the driver tried to evade police during a nine-kilometre car chase that ended in a cul-de-sac in Ma On Shan yesterday.
The 36-year-old driver refused to open the car doors and a policeman had to use his baton to smash a window. The driver injured two constables in the ensuing struggle before being arrested, police said.
The pursuit began when the Toyota Mark X was seen travelling above the 100km/h speed limit in the Kowloon-bound lane of the Tolo Highway near the Science Park in Sha Tin at about 1.30am.
Two officers in an unmarked police car tried to intercept the driver, but after at first slowing down, he sped off - doing more than 150km/h as the police gave chase. The silver car turned into Ma On Shan Road from the Tolo Highway and then turned into the Sai Kung-bound lane of Sai Sha Road before driving into a village in Kwun Hang, Ma On Shan. The chase lasted about five minutes, ending when the driver was cornered in a cul-de-sac.
'The man locked the doors and refused to get out. Police had to smash a window to arrest him,' a police spokesman said. 'He put up a struggle and injured two constables before he was arrested.'
He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, resisting arrest and assaulting police officers. He was being held for questioning last night.
