Sales of Mercedes-Benz cars in Hong Kong have surged by almost a third in the year to date and are on pace to trump last year's record, a top executive said yesterday.

'We have outperformed the market,' Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong chief operating officer Claus Weidner said.

Local sales of Mercedes-branded cars rose 30.1 per cent in the past eight months to 3,815 units, according to the company.

If the pace holds, the luxury car unit of Germany's Daimler is set to beat last year's sales record of 4,603 cars - which was up 36.5 per cent from recession-plagued 2009.

Weidner said the recent turmoil in financial markets made new car buyers cautious at first but the situation had since returned to normal.

'It was quite volatile in August but things stabilised and the month ended OK,' he said.
