A row has broken out over a herd of cattle which have made a Sai Kung residential estate their home.

Locals in the area near Sai Sha Road say the bovine invaders are disrupting traffic, frightening children and ripping up flowerbeds. They say their complaints to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department have been ignored and the herd has been allowed to grow to around 30 cows in the past two weeks.

A strip of grass in front of Symphony Bay Villa Rhapsody, on which the cows have taken up residence, was barren and devoid of foliage yesterday. A member of the estate's security management team, who declined to be named, said there were only three to four cows to start with. 'The herd has grown to over 20 in the past two weeks. Their dung is everywhere and when they pass by, they make a lot of noise,' he said.

A woman who lives in neighbouring Sai O village said the cows were disturbing residents. 'It's mating season, so fights often break out, which frighten children,' she said. 'They even walk up Sai Sha Road. Drivers have to slow down to let them pass or brake when they see them.

'I lodged a complaint with the department 10 days ago, but no one took any action. If the government keeps ignoring the issue, the herd will breed and grow much larger.'

A woman living at the Villa said police used their cars to try to drive the cows away on Sunday, 'but they soon came back'.
