If it wasn't for the Austrian firm Lomography, classic Hong Kong toy cameras such as the Diana F and the Holga may have faded into obscurity, along with the dream-like, over-saturated images they produce.
Creating faithful reproductions of the plastic-lensed snappers, along with a range of its own lo-fi cameras, Lomography single-handedly inspired the modern analogue photography movement and encouraged a new approach to taking pictures.
The result, decades on, is that the world now has an international network of Lomographers: photographers who approach life always with a camera in hand. Some may have even read the company's '10 golden rules' about how to take spontaneous pictures, which include 'try the shot from the hip' and 'don't think, just shoot'.
Hong Kong has a dedicated network of Lomographers and expect to see many out in force, dinky camera in hand, when Times Square presents an exhibition of the world photographed in Lomography style. Visitors will be able to walk amid a giant world map with each country cloaked in 'Lomographs' of its cities, landscapes and landmarks.
There will also be a dedicated Hong Kong 'LomoWall', featuring shots of the city looking about as cool as possible. At weekends, parents can also bring their children to ride a mini train that will take them around the square.
