Event
An inaugural international clean energy symposium was held at the Grand Hyatt Beijing. Held over two days last November for more than 200 delegates, the event brought together major industry leaders, academics, regulators and government officials to discuss policy issues and strategic developments. 
Objectives
The main objectives were to foster interaction between international and mainland executives in the energy industry, to encourage increased participation by mainland companies in international markets and to build a rapport between private and public sectors.  
Challenges
A major challenge was co-ordinating such a large event  where 80 per cent of delegates were from overseas during Beijing's cold winter. Organisers planned to have a welcome cocktail party in a hutong-style venue. After the original venue was cancelled a week before the event, organisers turned to the Grand Hyatt.  
Results
The symposium, side meetings and breakout sessions all went smoothly. The event was considered a 'pioneering effort' by its organisers.
