The Hong Kong Literary Festival is again upon us, giving readers the chance to catch up with notable authors, speakers and poets. Benjamin Zephaniah is all three, and his concert-like performances offer a refreshing alternative to regular literary readings.

Zephaniah's work ranges from dub poetry to children's books, via teenage novels and Rastafarian writing. His first novel, Face, was well received and tells the story of a teenager whose face is disfigured by burns in a car accident, employing social and emotional issues in the story.

What may impress many, though, is that his first album, 1982's Rasta, marked the Wailers' first return to the recording studio since the death of Bob Marley. A whole slew of accolades in addition to this have cemented his reputation in many artistic fields.

As well as reciting some of his works, Zephaniah (left) will discuss the process of writing - which should provide some interesting insights considering he was illiterate when he left school at the age of 13.
