A self-proclaimed prophet who partly disembowelled his flatmate with a knife said he did so in self-defence because he felt threatened by the victim's warning that his claims would anger the Muslim community, a court heard.
Muhammad Tariq, 39, waylaid Fiaz Muhammad as he came out of the bathroom of their flat in Hung Hom and lunged at him with a 37-centimetre knife, wounding him in the stomach, chest, arm and thigh, the District Court was told.
Judge Anthea Pang Ko-kam convicted Tariq, who pleaded not guilty, of stabbing with intent and adjourned sentencing to November 25, calling for psychiatric reports to determine whether a hospital order is needed.
The prosecution said Fiaz, an asylum seeker, had invited Tariq to share his flat after finding him homeless.
Fiaz said he heard that Tariq was telling Hong Kong Muslims that he was the prophet of Allah, and he warned him that doing so might incur the anger of the religious community. Muslims believe Mohammed received the Koran from God and was the last prophet of Islam.
Tensions escalated between the two, but they continued to live together in the flat, subsidised by International Social Services, a non-profit group that provides charity services to Hong Kong asylum seekers.
