Electroclash isn't the genre-busting game it used to be, but Montreal DJ-producer Tiga keeps his sound fresh with his trademark camp wit and a rock star-sized persona.
Many will know him for over-the-top, catchy tracks such as Shoes, off his most recent album, Ciao!, a high-gloss dance album crammed with sleazy bass lines and glammed-up synths. And if you're really in the know, you'll remember his much sexier, danceable cover of Nelly's Hot in Herre, with lead vocals from the Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears.
'The songs that have always been more successful are those electro-pop tunes, the club tunes, the stuff that comes naturally to me,' says Tiga (real name Tiga Sontag, right). Minimalist tracks such as Gentle Giant help balance out the album's camp moments, but when Tiga hits Hong Kong next week, we can expect a hefty dose of the club stuff.
'I don't think I do serious well. I secretly wish I was Leonard Cohen, but I've come to terms that it's just not who I am as a writer. My music will always come back to fun, sexy and club oriented.'
His first album, Sexor, was named dance recording of the year in 2007 at Canada's Grammy equivalent, the Juno Awards, while the artists he's worked with comprise a roll call of electronica's finest: LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, Soulwax, and German techno meister Boys Noize.
