There has been a lot of talk about the development of youth football since Hong Kong won the soccer gold at the East Asian Games in December.

Former Hong Kong star Lee Kin-wo says providing resources alone is not enough. Having a top-level football league and high-class players who can attract good crowds is the key to success, Lee says.

Lee, who is now coach of Third Division side Eastern, says he trained three times a day when he was a player.

With most of today's youngsters doing three training sessions a week, it is not surprising the standard of Hong Kong soccer is declining, he says.

'Many parents send their children to play soccer for fun or to stay fit. After all, study is the most important thing for children. Parents don't see a bright future in soccer.'

Lee says coaching standards also need to improve. 'I'm happy the government is discussing allocating more resources to soccer development. But there's still a long way to go.'

Lee is now in charge of Eastern's youth team who are taking part in this month's adidas Cup for under-13 and under-15 players.
