Why you can trust SCMP

In his latest collaboration with award-winning director Steven Soderbergh, The Informant!, Matt Damon plays chubby, dorky businessman, Mark Whitacre.

Whitacre is an employee of a multinational company suspected of price-fixing crimes, and he's recruited by the FBI to secretly help their investigation.

When the FBI's plan goes too smoothly, the agents start picking holes in Whitacre's ever-changing story and realise their inside man isn't as reliable as they'd hoped.

The numerous twists and clues in the story make it confusing and hard to follow. If you miss a moment, you may as well give up.

It's impossible to remember the names of all the companies and supporting characters, let alone the legal terms and procedures. And, while Whitacre's stream-of-consciousness monologues help make him a convincing and interesting character, they also help to make the plot even less coherent.

The story itself is fascinating - it is hard to believe this outrageous, stranger-than-fiction dark comedy is based on a real case from the 1990s.
