Operation Santa Claus - which has a rich and storied history of helping the disadvantaged in Hong Kong - has made many a splash.
The beginnings of the annual holiday appeal can be traced back to the 1960s, when RTHK Radio 3 presenters went the extra mile for charity, raising money through such stunts as climbing flagpoles and jumping into Victoria Harbour, according to RTHK executives Bryan Curtis and Tai Keen-man.
One of those brave souls who took a dip for the community was Franklin Wong Wah-kay, now the director of broadcasting for RTHK.
'He was one of the presenters,' said Tai, RTHK's assistant director of radio broadcasting. 'The water quality at the time I think was okay,' he added with a smile.
While such gestures were much appreciated, Operation Santa Claus dried up in the 1970s, fading out when the Community Chest gained prominence, said Curtis, RTHK's head of English programme service.
Years later, though, Operation Santa Claus was back.
