Fighting talk as City Telecom's Monkey King takes on PCCW
Misfortune never comes singly. If, as PCCW says, it is worried about losing the English Premier League broadcasting rights to rival Cable TV next year, it had better be alert to competitor, City Telecom.
That's the feeling after reading a statement from City Telecom chairman Ricky Wong Wai-kay (below), who began a price war with PCCW earlier this month by offering HK$99 per month for a home broadband service with download speed of 100 megabits per second.
'This is the only way to achieve our 10-year big, hairy, audacious goal of becoming the largest IP [internet protocol] provider in Hong Kong by 2016,' he wrote in the annual report.
'We are not just aiming at providing better services than the incumbent, but services that they cannot match ...'
Fighting talk, indeed.
