Adolf Hitler had German parents but he was born and brought up in Austria. Hitler wasn't very good at school. He wanted to be an artist but he was not good enough to go to college.  
Disappointed, Hitler moved to Germany. When the first world war began in 1914, Hitler joined the German army. He was very brave and won medals. When Germany lost the war, Hitler was furious.  
Hitler joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party (nicknamed the Nazi Party). He made speeches blaming Communists and Jews for Germany's defeat.  
At first, people didn't take him seriously. When Hitler tried to take over the government, he was arrested and charged with treason. But over time Hitler won supporters. 
In 1933, Hitler won the elections. He quickly began building up his army. Hitler then invaded Austria and Czechoslovakia. When he invaded Poland in September 1939, Britain and France decided to fight. It was the start of the second world war.   
In the beginning, Germany did very well. Hitler's army conquered Europe from Norway in the north to France in the south and Poland in the east. But Hitler took on too much. He had to control the countries he conquered - and fight Russia, Britain and their allies too. 
When Hitler realised he had lost the war, he married girlfriend Eva Braun. They then both committed suicide.

The Holocaust

Hitler hated Jews. When he became the leader of Germany he made it illegal for Jewish people to have government jobs. A few years later Jews were no longer allowed to be German citizens. 
Hitler and the Nazis planned to kill all the Jews in Europe. They put Jews into concentration camps and began murdering them. Between 1939 and 1945, the Nazis killed about 6 million European Jews. This mass killing is called the Holocaust. 
Jews weren't the only people to suffer. Other Holocaust victims included 3 million Soviet prisoners of war, 2 million ethnic Poles, 1.5 million gypsies and 250,000 disabled people.
