Adolf Hitler had German parents but he was born and brought up in Austria. Hitler wasn't very good at school. He wanted to be an artist but he was not good enough to go to college.

Disappointed, Hitler moved to Germany. When the first world war began in 1914, Hitler joined the German army. He was very brave and won medals. When Germany lost the war, Hitler was furious.

Hitler joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party (nicknamed the Nazi Party). He made speeches blaming Communists and Jews for Germany's defeat.
