Tai Wing Wah Restaurant 2-6 On Ling Rd Yuen Long Tel: 2476 9888

Grub: Founded in 1950, this famous restaurant serves rural wai tsuen choi, or 'walled village cuisine'.

Its fame is due to Hugo Leung Man-to, better known as To-to, a famous local food critic who often hosts TV food shows.

Vibe: Every single corner of this traditional Chinese restaurant is covered in media reports about and photos of To-to. His popularity and excellent food means it's almost always packed, and you are more than likely to have to queue.

Who to bring: Family and friends who love Chinese food, especially anyone who wants to try dishes that were popular in old Hong Kong.

What's hot: It's likely that everyone will be eating a bowl of rice. This is one of Tai Wing Wah's signature items - steamed rice dressed in soy sauce and lard. This was once a popular dish among the masses when the city was less affluent. 'First-brew' soy sauce and lard are typical flavours of the Hong Kong of the past.

Another signature dish is chicken in five flavours. The poultry is soaked in virgin soy sauce for 15 minutes, before being mixed with Sichuan pepper, nutmeg, aniseed, cinnamon and tangerine peel.
