Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks is looking for someone to nurture business start-ups
A golden opportunity to contribute to local society is open to business development professionals having sound management skills with science or engineering degrees.
A corporation that is 100 per cent owned by the Hong Kong government and run on commercial principles is seeking a replacement vice-president, business development and technology support.
The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation mission is to provide the infrastructure and a comprehensive range of services to enable Hong Kong to become a world-class technology hub.
The park provides partner companies with the facilities, such as offices, laboratory services and programmes, that they require to operate successfully.
'Our objective is helping Hong Kong expand its knowledge-intensive economy beyond finance and trading and to create a more sustainable economy,' said chief executive Anthony Tan.
'We want the corporation to be the catalyst helping Hong Kong to create more jobs in the technology and innovation arena to provide opportunities for people graduating from university,' Mr Tan said.
The vice-president, business development and technology support, is accountable for nurturing business start-ups in technology and innovation by operating a comprehensive incubation programme for firms.
This position is also responsible for providing market-oriented laboratory services through establishing technology software infrastructure as needed by the technology and innovation sector.
The other critical element of the role is to build and maintain a network of contacts with tertiary education institutions, global industrial players, professional organisations and technology providers to achieve networking and collaboration resulting in a synergy of research and design work.
Willingness to travel on a regular basis is a basic requirement.
Present vice-president, business development and technology support S. W. Cheung,  said: 'Although we are looking for someone with a technical background they do not necessarily have to be a specialist.
'We have different clients and technologies we are targeting, such as electronics, precision engineering and biotechnology,' Mr Cheung said.
The ideal candidate should have excellent management skills and must be confident of leading a team of 70-plus laboratory technicians and engineers.
'We also need someone who has great interpersonal skills and is able to make an impact on people,' Mr Cheung said.
This is one of the key management roles for the corporation. Future developments of the park will bring new facilities and opportunities which will be reflected in the role's responsibilities and scope of influence.
Although the role is well remunerated, applicants should note that it is tailored for individuals who want to contribute their expertise and experience for the long-term benefit of Hong Kong.
'This is a rewarding job, but you must have passion for what you do,' Mr Cheung said.
'At the interview, you should discuss your needs honestly and openly, rather than try to sell yourself,' Mr Tan said.
