About 2,500 people defied scorching temperatures to take part in the Olympic Day Run 2007 at Wan Chai Sports Ground last Sunday.

This is proof that sport is becoming increasingly popular in Hong Kong, a top sports official said.

The theme of this year's race, organised by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), was 'Activate your Sports Potential'.

It was aimed at introducing running as a leisure activity, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle among the public.

At Sunday's opening ceremony, SF&OC president Timothy Fok Tsun-ting said: 'The federation is inspired by the overwhelming number of participants - nearly 2,500 Hong Kong citizens - in this year's Olympic Day Run who have shown their support for Hong Kong sports.'

The three-kilometre route took runners past several landmarks, including Golden Bauhinia Square, Citic Tower and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, before finishing at Wan Chai Sports Ground.

The participants also visited games booths at the sports ground. The photo-taking counter, which was set up for runners to capture the moment with their friends and family, was a huge hit.
