Most of us use our Macs to do important things. Reports, studies, forms, essays, spreadsheets and illustrations are just a few of the things open on my desktop at any given moment. I work, therefore I am. I think that's how the saying goes.

But occasionally I need to take a break so I don't start thinking of my Mac as the enemy. Sometimes I need to have a little fun and use my Mac for something that isn't related to a deadline or schedule.

This is where games come in - little diversions that let my mind unwind.

My favourite, which holds pride of place at the extreme right of my dock, is Solitaire Forever (www.solitaireforever.com; US$25), a beautifully illustrated 3D suite of 100 solitaire games. It has seen me through hundreds of hours of waiting in airports and almost the equivalent when writers' block has set in. Because it's so visually striking, I love playing it around PC owners to make them jealous.

I asked a few friends what addictive diversions they could recommend; here are a few of their favourites.

Described as a cross between herding sheep and shooting pool, Krank (krank.sourceforge.net) is a free game highly regarded for the relaxing effect it has on players. Attractive images and soothing music make it ideal for unwinding when the need arises.
