Fumes and fuel are in Jason Broome's blood. Even now, despite his lofty position in charge of the Rolls-Royce brand in Hong Kong, Macau and China, he enjoys spending his spare time around cars.
Recently promoted to general manager of Goodwood Motors, Mr Broome has had his head under the bonnet of a car since he can remember.
'I've been involved with cars for a very long time,' he said. 'I started as a mechanic. I can run a business, but I can also take a car apart and put it back together without too many pieces left over.'
His mechanic friends still take him to Zhuhai on the mainland, where he races motorbikes. In May he hopes to race in Shanghai in the Motor GP and, later in the year, in Macau, a circuit he knows well and on which he has enjoyed success.
'The China racing scene is still underdeveloped. You really have to commit to it. Accommodation, travel and storage can be expensive, but there are some really good teams and riders.
'You have to be passionate about racing,' Mr Broome said, admitting that the passion takes a fair chunk out of his weekends. 'For one thing, I'll probably be watching the Grand Prix on Sunday, rather than the Rugby Sevens.'
