AN outstanding student and a brilliant academic from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have won scholarships to spend six to 10 months doing research at leading institutions in the United States.
The Fulbright Hong Kong Scholar Programme is jointly supported by the Research Grants Council and the Fulbright Programme of the US.
In the past, up to four such awards have been given to Hong Kong scholars every year.
This year the programme has been expanded to include postgraduate students. Two new research awards have been made possible through donations from the Bank of America (Asia) and American International Group (AIG).
PolyU land surveying and geo-informatics PhD student Charles Wong Man-sing is thrilled with his research award. Mr Wong is currently undertaking doctoral studies on the use of satellite images for monitoring air pollution in Hong Kong and southern China.
With sponsorship of $105,000, Mr Wong will go in September to the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Centre of the University of Maryland, Washington DC, for 10 months.
