HONG Kong International School will be getting new equipment for its Life Skills Centre, thanks to a donation of US$20,000 (HK$156,000).

The cheque was presented to Mr David Rittmann, headmaster of Hong Kong International School, at a recent ceremony.

The funds will be used to buy equipment for the school's new Life Skills Centre, where boys and girls from Grade Six to Eight will be taught practical skills for day to day living, such as cooking, sewing, babysitting, and health care at home.

The donation is the Whirlpool Foundation's first contribution to a community programme outside the US.

''Many working parents see the importance of training children to be more independent, and Whirlpool is pleased to be able to contribute in this area,'' Mr Merriam said. ''The foundation will continue to assist non-profit organisations as an ongoing commitment to the community.'' The foundation's funding priorities represent lifelong learning, cultural diversity and contemporary family life.

Since its founding, the company has granted more than US$50 million to a variety of non-profit organisations.
