Puccini

(EMI Classics)

When Angela Gheorghiu recently performed some of the arias from her new CD, Puccini, the London crowd gave her the rapturous reception that they famously used to give Maria Callas. The Romanian still has some way to go before being crowned as Callas' successor, but she shares with the Greek diva a darkness and intensity of voice and a dramatic potency that's perfect for interpreting Puccini's tragic heroines.

This CD is a powerful showcase for Gheorghiu's mastery of romantic Italian opera - her ability to realise Puccini's heady, technicolour mix of passion and regret. A heartbreaking Un bel di vendremo from Madame Butterfly is the magnificent first of 17 arias, including works from La Boheme, Turandot and the more rarely performed Edgar and Le Villi.

Accompanying Gheorghiu is 88-year-old Anton Coppola, who conducts the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giusseppe Verdi, and is experienced in Puccini's works.
