CORPORATE CUSTOMERS are becoming increasingly aware of the need for security at the platform level, especially given the well-publicised security flaws in the Windows platform, and Sun Microsystems hopes to capitalise on this with its latest version of its Solaris operating system.

Simon Leung, Sun's general manager for Hong Kong and Macau, said: 'For the past few years, security has been one of the key issues, when they [customers] pick a platform.'

Solaris 10, the latest version of the operating system, has many new security features.

These have been certified at Evaluated Assurance Level 4+, which is the equivalent of military-grade security.

The security features of Solaris 10 need to be individually activated by the user - allowing companies to set the level of security they want and deploy only the features they need.

Among the new features are process management, an automated software patch tool, and the Solaris Cryptographic Framework.
