THEY SET UP a website in a matter of hours, formed a 'union' in a day and have won the support of hundreds of fellow secondary students over the past week. And, they are ready to take action tomorrow.
Ten sixth formers came together last week to form an action group called Hong Kong Secondary Students Concerning Article 23 Legislation Union, calling on teenagers across the SAR to join the mass demonstration tomorrow.
Organised by the Civil Human Rights Front, the mass protest aims to give the public an opportunity to voice their concerns about and opposition to the proposed Article 23 legislation.
Article 23 of the Basic Law is implemented by drafting the National Security Bill, which will specify acts endangering national security. It is to be passed in the last Legislative Council meeting on July 9.
Legislators have already criticised that there had been inadequate public consultation and the government is attempting to rush the bill through. They are also concerned that the proposed provisions on sedition have triggered serious concern about the freedom of expression.
The confusion over what constitutes the act of 'inciting others to engage in violent public disorder' and the unclear terms used in the offences of treason have fuelled fears of self-censorship in the media.
