The message from hundreds of malaria experts from around the world who are in Cambodia this week is that only intense cross-border and scientific co-operation in the region will keep the deadly mosquito at bay.

Papers will be presented by experts from countries including Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines to show how specific programmes to track, treat and prevent malaria outbreaks have succeeded - or failed.

The results of a five-year European Commission-funded project across the Mekong River region show dramatic drops in malaria infection.

By detailing just how this has been achieved, the Mekong Malaria Symposium to be held in Siem Reap, Cambodia, from tomorrow until Thursday, will add significant experience to the worldwide effort to combat what is one of the world's biggest killers.

But a look at some of the papers due to be presented shows that back-patting on lowering malaria rates will give way to acknowledging just how much concerted effort is needed to sustain that success.

In Laos, new programmes over the past five years have reduced both mortality rates and morbidity - the incidence of the disease - in target areas by about 90 per cent.
