Shenzhen-based networking gear-maker Huawei Technologies is rapidly expanding its international business through its newly formed subsidiary in the United States, FutureWei.

Privately run Huawei, the mainland's largest telecommunications and networking equipment supplier, expected FutureWei to swiftly carve a significant market niche in North America against multinational vendors such as Cisco Systems and Lucent Technologies.

Huawei executive vice-president William Xu said: 'As we compete alongside the top players in the international arena, this will take us to the next level of becoming a truly global player.'

The company formally announced the launch of FutureWei, which has its US headquarters in Texas, at the annual Supercomm telecommunications industry exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia, on Tuesday.

Johnson Chang, executive vice-president at FutureWei, said the company aimed to become a leading supplier of service provider-class telecommunications equipment and low to mid-range enterprise networking gear throughout the US and Canada.

Mr Chang said FutureWei, which counts regional centres in California and Virginia, was confident of generating significant business in North America as it provided faster service, more advanced systems and bigger cost-savings.

The company's participation at this year's Supercomm with parent firm Huawei aims to attract prominent North American distributors for its products, which will carry both its own brand and Huawei's.
