CALLS for licensing of real estate agents has won almost unanimous support from lawmakers and professional bodies, promising an easy passage for a Legislative Council motion on the issue tomorrow.

In a rare show of solidarity, rival political camps have pledged to support the motion by United Democrat Albert Chan Wai-yip.

Legislators hope the introduction of licensing will help keep proper checks on agents and ensure the protection of consumer rights.

Besides the 13 United Democrats, independent legislators Eric Li Ka-cheung, Samuel Wong Ping-wai and Vincent Cheng Hoi-chuen welcomed the call.

Legco's 15 Liberal Party members, four from Meeting Point and Frederick Fung Kin-kee of the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood also pledged support.

Mr Chan said the Government had been reluctant to monitor the operation of real estate agents so now was the time to introduce a system to ensure higher professional standards.
