Shenzhen has officially announced the arrest of former vice-mayor Wang Ju who allegedly accepted bribes to approve land contracts.

The announcement was made at a recent meeting when Shenzhen Party Secretary Zhang Gaoli reviewed the city's anti-corruption work carried out last year.

It has been widely reported by the overseas press that Wang was arrested for alleged corruption, but Shenzhen officials have been reluctant until now to reveal details of his any offences.

The official Xinhua said yesterday Shenzhen officials reported that last year five major corruption cases were investigated. Officials investigated include Wang, former Shenzhen Customs chief Zhao Yucun, former deputy chief of Shenzhen Land Bureau Pang Chenghong, former planning director of the Land Bureau Cai Jianhui and former party secretary of Shenzhen Construction Materials Corporation Huang Jieping.

The reports did not specify Wang's 'crimes', but said he had 'violated disciplines' of the Communist Party and Government and broken the law in approving land contracts and accepting large bribes.

The semi-official China News Service said Wang's corruption case was the most serious of the five and said it was directly handled by China's top anti-graft body.
