FILIPINO domestic helpers were yesterday given another chance to organise Sunday bazaars, this time at Western Park in Sai Ying Pun, following the success of a similar venture at Moreton Terrace in Causeway Bay last month.

The Urban Services Department (USD) yesterday decided to give the organisers three months for the bazaars after an appeal for a permanent site from Vonnie Boston, a magazine publisher who masterminded the programme.

Except for a booking one Sunday in August and another in September, Filipino workers will be allowed to use the venue exclusively, they were told.

The one-hectare site, next to the Western reclamation area, consists of a grassed area for sitting out and a playground for stalls and a stage.

Mrs Boston said the organisers would apply to use the site for as long as they could as domestic helpers needed somewhere to spend their days off.

''We need a place, somewhere in Hongkong, which we can use permanently. Western Park is excellent and we are happy . . . to get a place to use,'' she said.

Stanley Lee Lap-chee, an acting deputy director of the USD, said the trial on three Sundays last month at Moreton Terrace was too short to evaluate its success.
