Fear not, there is no shortage of things to do over New Year, even if you do not make it to a swanky party. There are plays, musicals, concerts, films and exhibitions, carnivals and, of course, what else in Hong Kong, a fireworks display.
In what promises to be one of the most interesting millennium-related activities, the Hong Kong Arts Centre, RTHK and the Film Culture Centre invite people to film one-minute videos on December 31, documenting the final minute of the century in Hong Kong.
The entry deadline is January 10, and selected entries will be screened at the Arts Centre in March. Inquiries: 2582 0288.
Award-winning local theatre company Springtime Stage Productions presents two shows in the APA Drama Theatre. From December 17 until January 16, Butterflies Are Free is a comedy about a young blind man's romance with his kooky neighbour (the movie starred Goldie Hawn).
Alternating with that show, from December 18 until January 16, is another romantic comedy, Non Dimenticar, about a couple in love who can meet only once a year. Both plays will be performed on New Year's Eve, with Non Dimenticar at 7pm and Butterflies Are Free at 9.45pm.
At the Hong Kong Coliseum, Canto-pop composers Joseph Koo Ka-fai and James Wong will perform with guest artists each night, from December 24 to 31 at 8.15pm.
