Flooding in an iron ore mine in Shandong province has left 29 workers trapped 150 metres below ground for nine days, Xinhua reported yesterday.
A further 160 miners managed to escape after water started rising on July 12 at the Laiwu Iron and Steel Group's mine, the news agency said.
Rescuers were drilling a well to help stop the water from seeping into the tunnels. They then planned to pump water out of the flooded section in an attempt to save the miners.
