All 68,000 blood samples involved in the syphilis scare are to be retested, even though most have been used in transfusions, the Red Cross said yesterday.

The tests can be done because the Red Cross keeps samples of all the blood it supplies to hospitals.

Patients would be told if the sample of the blood they had been given tested positive for the sexually transmitted disease, said Dr Liu Hing-wing of the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service.

Transfusions were halted for five hours on Thursday after it was discovered potentially faulty kits had been used to test 68,173 samples - donated between June 15 and October 14 - for syphilis.

The Red Cross yesterday conducted a test on a woman in her 70s who reported symptoms after being given red cell components at Tuen Mun Hospital.

'Tests on all five blood specimens used by the woman showed negative results,' Dr Liu said.

Another five inquiries were received by yesterday but none needed blood tests.
