Police investigating 11 unsolved child sex attacks revealed yesterday a nine-year-old North Point girl had been beaten on Tuesday.

'It's not a sexual attack, but it's a very violent one,' Chief Inspector Chris Richards of Eastern District said.

The girl was travelling in a lift up to the fourth floor of the housing block where she lived, he said.

'[The attacker] got out at the third floor, walked up the stairs and banged her head repeatedly against the wall.

'She's not in a life-threatening situation, but she's black and blue and her head's knocked around.' Across the territory, police recorded 35 indecent assaults on girls under 16 in June, 23 in July and 35 last month. Figures for boys were unavailable yesterday.

'These cases are becoming - we can't say prevalent - but they're a cause for concern,' Chief Inspector Richards said.
