Eighteen people will be prosecuted for alleged involvement in the 18.3 billion yuan (HK$17.01 billion) corruption scandal concerning disgraced ex-vice mayor Wang Baosen , Beijing's chief procurator, He Fangba , says.

Mr He said the group, allegedly involved in 17 cases linked to Wang's crimes, had been investigated and would be brought to trial soon.

The municipal chief judge, Sheng Liangang said Beijing's courts would hear the cases this year.

But neither official disclosed when the trials would begin or the identities of the 18 accused when making their annual reports to the Beijing Municipal People's Congress yesterday.

It is not known if Chen Xitong , former party boss in Beijing, is among the group. Chen has been detained for allegedly covering up Wang's economic crimes but has not been brought to court.

Mr He said 24 cases involving 25 people had been under investigation by anti-corruption units under the Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate.
